Fabrizio Romano has poured water on the fire of one transfer rumour involving Arsenal before it ever really got going.
It was reported just yesterday that Atletico Madrid midfielder, Thomas Lemar, had been offered to the Gunners and Everton this summer. This, despite Atleti spending more than £50m on the Frenchman just four years ago.
However, as quickly as the rumour on Lemar to Arsenal seemed to start, Romano has moved to suggest that that deal will not be happening at all. In fact, quite the opposite it seems, with Lemar instead set to sign a new contract with the Spanish giants.
Confirming the news via his Twitter account today, Romano confirmed that Lemar and Jan Oblak will both sign new deals with the La Liga club.
Of course, Arsenal fans will be disappointed to hear of the news around Lemar. However, there’s nothing to be too down in the dumps about, given the Gunners have enjoyed a fine transfer window on the whole already.
Edu has managed to sign Fabio Vieira and Gabriel Jesus, while Matt Turner and Marquinhos have also signed on at The Emirates. The Gunners are still in the market for new players, too, with more new faces tipped to arrive before the end of August.
Our View: Lemar A Luxury Signing For Arsenal Anyway
Lemar has done ok since signing for Atletico but he’s hardly lit the world up either. With that, it’s hard to see why Arsenal fans would be too disappointed here.
Of course, adding quality is always a good plan. And Lemar, on his day anyway, can be a quality player. However, where he’d fit in this Arsenal team, and the fact reports suggested he’d been openly offered to clubs, suggests he’s not Atleti’s main priority.
Giving him a new deal might be a way of them protecting his value, more than them ruling out an exit completely.
