Speaking on The Done Deal Show, Ben Jacobs has been discussing Lisandro Martinez ahead of his reported move to Manchester United.
The Argentine is set to join the Red Devils this summer, but he was reportedly very close to heading to Arsenal at one point.
Indeed, while some Manchester United fans would like to have you believe that this was a one-horse race, according to Jacobs, Arsenal were in the mix until the very end.
In fact, according to the journalist, the race was so close that Martinez showed a sign of respect by actually phoning Mikel Arteta personally this week to inform him of his decision.
WHAT’S BEEN SAID?
Jacobs spoke about Martinez’s phone call to Arteta.
“What tells you that the race was open for a very long time is the fact that Martinez picked up the phone and personally told Arteta that he wouldn’t be joining around about 48 hours ago or so. So there was a lot of respect on the Arsenal side as well. This was by no means a one club or one manager race, Arsenal were firmly in it,” Jacobs said.
THE TEN HAG FACTOR
Martinez was reportedly sold on the Arsenal project, and it sounds like he had to really consider his next move here.
However, with Erik Ten Hag in charge at Old Trafford, a move to Manchester is one that makes the most sense at this moment in time.
Indeed, Martinez knows the manager and his system and joining the Red Devils is much less of a risk than joining the Gunners for this particular player at the moment.
Of course, whether or not he lives to regret that decision remains to be seen, but Martinez’s chance to sign for Arsenal has now seemingly been and gone.
