Report: Arsenal have now made their second bid for 24-year-old also wanted by Barcelona

Arsenal have now made their second bid for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez as they ramp up their attempts to sign him.

It seems the 24-year-old is Mikel Arteta’s defensive priority as he presses forward with the improvements to his squad.

Fabio Vieira is on the verge of signing, the Gabriel Jesus deal is progressing and expected to be done, and Arteta also wants another central defender.

The Daily Mail report that Arsenal are now willing to pay £30 million for the Argentine international, having seen a £25 million bid initially rejected.

Arsenal make second bid for Martinez

Ajax are apparently confident of sparking a bidding war, with Barcelona also keen on the defender this summer.

But their financial troubles are well-known, and they have largely been in the market for free agents in recent windows.

So Arsenal should be able to outbid them if it comes down to finances, but Champions League football is on offer at the Nou Camp.

The fact that Martinez can also play at left-back means that Arteta would reportedly likely let Nuno Tavares leave if he came in.

That is after just one season at the Emirates Stadium, where he has shown his attacking quality but also defensive frailty and inconsistency.

The report says it would be a loan deal, which might suit the young defender who clearly just needs time to improve and mature.
