Report: Barcelona midfield gem is untransferable for Xavi

The past couple of weeks have seen Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong become the subject of intense transfer speculation ahead of the summer window.

The 24-year-old joined the Blaugrana in the summer of 2019 in a huge deal worth €86 million. But, despite showing his qualities, de Jong is still yet to reach the heights expected of him.

Especially in the current season, his performances have fluctuated quite a fair bit, contributing to the rumours surrounding his future at Camp Nou. His angry reaction after being the first player to be subbed off against Rayo Vallecano last week also played a part in the rumours.

As for Barcelona’s stance on the matter, there have been contrasting reports emerging in the media. Manager Xavi Hernandez and club official Jordi Cruyff had claimed that they see de Jong as an integral part of the team for the future.

But that has not stopped the rumour mill from churning out reports claiming that the Catalans might actually consider selling the former Ajax ace to help their financial situation.

However, now, another report from journalist Santi Ovalle has claimed that despite the claims, manager Xavi considers de Jong untransferable and his continuity in the side is pretty much guaranteed.

The Barcelona boss revealed after the win against Mallorca that he had spoken to de Jong about his situation, saying: “I told Frenkie that he must constantly make a difference, I told him that there are few players in the world with his qualities.”

It is clear that the 42-year-old tactician values de Jong highly and has faith in the midfielder’s qualities. So, unless a huge offer comes along in the summer, it does seen extremely unlikely that Barcelona would consider the prospect of selling the Dutch ace.
