Report: Erik ten Hag makes one key demand before signing for Man United

Ajax boss Erik ten Hag wants enough power over the decision-making once he takes charge as the new Man United boss, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano claims.

Ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino have been the leading contenders for the managerial vacancy, but it has recently emerged that the hierarchy have decided to appoint the former.

The Red Devils are prepared to pay the small compensation fee for his release from Ajax during the summer, but it appears the Dutchman has yet to agree terms over a contract.

Ten Hag wants ‘enough power’ to decide on the future United project such that the club can avoid making transfer mistakes of the past. This is holding up a formal agreement.

Our view:

United have spent significant fees on marquee signings over the past few years, but it has not necessarily paved the way for success with the lack of cohesion within the team.

Should Ten Hag take over, it could be a slow rebuilding process. The Dutchman may give priority to young players with valuable experience over big-name signings with huge price tags.

However, he may not be completely averse to high-profile purchases, having worked with experienced players at Ajax. The onus will be on building a squad for long-term success.

As such, he would require the complete backing from the United board. The 52-year-old needs to have sufficient power to veto transfer targets, who may not suit his style of play at the Red Devils.

It has previously been reported that United are prepared to trust Ten Hag’s decision-making, but the Dutchman may want assurances that he won’t have any interference going forward with the job.
