Ten Hag told there is one Manchester United player he shouldn’t drop

Erik ten Hag should keep Manchester Utd striker Cristiano Ronaldo in his team next season if he continues to score, according to Marco van Basten.

The signings of Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho were meant to take the Red Devils to the next level this season but instead they have gone backwards.

Man United currently sit in sixth position in the Premier League with fourth-placed Arsenal – who beat them 3-1 at the weekend – now six points clear of Ralf Rangnick’s men.

There has been speculation that Ronaldo would ask to leave Old Trafford in the summer if the Red Devils failed to qualify for the Champions League.

The Portugal international has scored 22 goals in 35 matches, including four in his last two matches, but the striker has still been criticised for his performances with some suggesting he could have had a negative impact on the dressing room.

But Van Basten thinks his recent form in front of goal shows how valuable he could be to Ten Hag, who could get the best out of the Man Utd striker.

“If Ronaldo carries on playing like he did last week [against Norwich] and scores two or three goals in a match on a regular basis, there is no need to take him out of the team,” Van Basten told The Rondo Show (via Goal).

“Ronaldo is a player who does his own thing, but as long as he delivers, you have to give him a place in the team.

“Ten Hag will take into account that he cannot ask the same things physically from Cristiano Ronaldo that he will be asking of an 18-year-old.

“Of course Ronaldo will need to work hard – but I am sure he will work hard because I can see Ten Hag having an influence on him to get him to play how he wants.”

Former Netherlands international Van Basten has warned Ten Hag not to listen to the English media when he starts work at Man Utd.

“I will give Erik one piece of advice: don’t listen to the media when you start there,” Van Basten added.

“He will have such a massive focus on his own job, on his work on the training ground and on the team. And when he does that, I am sure he can change everything at United.”
